Aimed at those of us who ‘indoor cycle,’ ‘paincave,’ Zwift,’ or even ‘Peloton.’ We often see pictures from the ‘post your paincave Saturday’ style social media posts. What often strikes us here at the Titaniumgeek is the lack of a decent fan – or even a fan at all!
Arguably, a fan, after a suitable turbo trainer and bike is THE most important piece of kit, here is why:
A fan helps you to:
- Stay cool
- Regulate your temperature, therefore getting more watts out (try running in a bin liner and you will see what we mean)
- Produce far less sweat (and not ruin your floor or have a matt to wash)
- Be more successful in on-line races
- No need to wear gloves, headbands and things like that
Which fan? – Any decent sized fan is good and maybe two? Airflow in the room that you train is also essential. This allows your fan to circulate new cooler air and not the same air used for a session where your body and electronics equipment are heating the air in that room.
What works for us? Training in a garage and having the garage door up, even in the winter. Having a fan will a speed adjustment is also incredibly useful – on cold days, turn it down and on hot days, turn it up. Some people even connect their fan to Google Home or Alexa.
I run hot! – B*llsh*t!! Your fan isn’t big enough, or powerful enough. If you sweat a lot, you need a bigger fan and it’s as simple as that. If you have a very expensive branded fan, designed specifically for turbo training and you still sweat too much – you could have spent less money for a really effective fan(s) from your local hardware store. Sorry, it’s the brutal truth.
Many thanks for reading and blow-on!
