It all started with a pandemic – okay, that’s a terrible start….well, it all started when people discovered indoor cycling. The post-2012 cohort of born-again-cyclists had only ridden their Pinarello F something or other bikes outside and in winter, with mudguards. When you spend that much on a bike, why even do anything else, right? A reason to ride indoors happened and people discovered how fit, fast and stronger they could get and how much fun it could be.
Some people then realised that sports supplements are not needed when riding indoors, as you can have a fridge parked next to your turbo …. okay, okay, enough about me!!
It is argued that the leading platform is hugely gamified and makes a big thing out of the ‘new courses coming soon?’ – what they do is absolutely brilliant from a marketing and engagement perspective – however, for the hardened sceptic with years of turbo training under their bottom bracket, it’s less compelling and being able to ride new stuff all of the time is rather nice. After all, do I really want new socks and a badge for riding a certain course (and those socks and badges are digital?)
Enter RGT Cycling and their Magic Roads. A Magic Road is a user uploading a .gpx file on to RGT to create a favourite route. It takes minutes. There are even the 100 best climbs in the world on there. Finding them can be a little tricky. However, users have come to the rescue and here is a website under development that we are enjoying https://magicroads.org/?fbclid=IwAR1JYXOgSXX9MzcXxoEqnDfFKQIqcOp1tooRQq7Dl9-b8z7AywZu7UgDHoU
Search for the Magic Road that meets your needs, follow the steps on the RGT app and start your ride. We do enjoy a peleton (a bunch of bots and not an indoor spin-bike and app) of 99 bots to ride with.
A word of warning, the scenery is generic. However, the experience in terms of time is being reported by my globe-trotting, Nice living, friend as being very close to his IRL Strava times.
Top tips for PCs and alike when experiencing Magic Roads. My Apple TV doesn’t show the best graphics. The Apple TV 4k is absolutely fine, as is the iPad Pro, MacBook Pro and gaming PC. The moral, get something that can handle the graphics for maximum enjoyment.
