What is Amp Human’s PR Lotion? It’s an embrocation that you rub into your muscle 30 minutes prior to exercise. The theory is that the sodium bicarbonate in the solution suppresses lactate and allows the athlete to generate more power.
Skeptics like us may think ‘rubbing bicarb into our legs to make us faster? That’s like rubbing cake into your legs and missing out on the enjoyment!’ For me, the discovery started with a pre podcast chat with a leading sports scientist and Amp Human’s PR lotion sitting in the background. I had doubts, the sports scientist was less skeptical. Bicarb buffering lactate acid, there may well well be something in it. Then we took a deep delve into who is behind this product and here are some of the members of their scientific board:
- Brad Wilkins– Ph.D., Former Director, Nike Sport Research Laboratory; Advisory Board Chairman and Amp Human executive.
- Nigel Mitchel – Ph.D., Head Nutritionist for British Cycling.
- Andy Jones – Ph.D., Professor of Applied Physiology, University of Exeter, leading exercise physiology researcher.
- Jason Siegler – Ph.D., Western Sydney University, foremost expert in bicarb use in exercise.
- Brett Kirby – Ph.D, Human Performance Lead in the Nike Sport Research Laboratory.
- Per Lundstrom – Director of Athlete Performance at Red Bull.
- Hoby Darling – President of Human Performance at Logitech.
- Paul Dituro – Served 13 years in Special Operations and influenced human performance programs for the military’s elite.
With the leading lights listed above, there is a phalanx of critical thinking at Amp Human and their goals is to guide Amp Human in it’s goal to advance human performance. Currently, there are no studies out there with a sufficient cohort of subjects and where the data has been peer-reviewed. Therefore, if you, I or your Great Uncle Bert’s great-granddaughter, Sonya try it, will you get the same results of the studies?
Saying that, a pandemic has somewhat disrupted the ability for mass testing and the Red Bull High Performance and Exercising Nutritionally LLC, have published initial tests where in a 5-minute cycling test, 6.7% more power was generated and significantly more power in ‘breakaway’ efforts. The study was carried out blind, with researchers and athletes not knowing who was using either the PR Lotion or the standard embrocation.
A friend, leading word sporty psychologist, Prof Andy Lane, often points out to me, ‘if something works for you, it works.’ Even with products with a batch of evidence to prove that it works and those without any evidence, we know that placebo is incredibly power. Never under-estimate the power of your brain influencing you out perform! Over time, the evidence-base for Amp Human’s PR lotion will come. In the meantime, let’s look at my experience using it and also who else uses it.
Currently, I spend most of my time indoor cycling, walking and the odd run. My Strava TSS is a moderate 500 per week. I have used the PR Lotion when I do hard sessions. Bear in mind that I’m the wrong side of 55 years of age and I do get fatigued easier these days. At this point (YouTube video to follow that will include data) this is anecdotal. What have I found? Well, just the routine of rubbing in the lotion is a trigger that I’m going to do a hard session. It’s a ceremony that takes me back to time trailing very early on a Sunday morning, readying myself for a 25 mile time trial and a sub-hour of suffering. An amazing thing about the PR lotion is that it also clears the hands of any chain oil form an earlier bit of maintenance!
Once on the bike, where I found the difference was when I started to pile the watts on and where the burn would usually start, I didn’t notice it – I could do harder for longer! In the following chart, are two similar rides that felt the same, one with PR Lotion and the other without.
Yes, so many factors could have affected these sessions. In my defence in this garage science, I was using the same calibrated power meter and in the same event. In the Amp Human PR Lotion rubbed in event, it was slightly shorter. I recall the same feeling or hard graft afterwards. What you can’t see is that in the Amp Human session, I was the one pushing on in the group. In the non-Amp Human session, I was doing more surfing the wheels and only putting on the watts out of the bends. You might the thinking ‘it’s all in the mind!’ It might be and it might not. It might be a bit of both and I go back to Prof Andy Lane’s point ‘if it works, it works!’
It’s worth remembering that many world class runners use the PR Lotion; US Triathlon the EF Pro Cycling Team, Team Ineo’s and former Tour de France winner, Geraint Thomas, 50% of America’s NBA and NFL teams and many more, including Lance Armstrong in his post retirement smack-downs with George Hincape.
